چکیده

We have analyzed high-resolution, adaptive optics (AO) HK observations of the Arches cluster obtained with NAOS/CONICA. With a spatial resolution of 84 mas, the cluster center is uniquely resolved. From these data the present-day mass function (MF) of Arches is derived down to ∼ 4M⊙. The integrated MF as well as the core and 2 annulus MFs are consistent with a turn-over at 6−7M⊙. This turn-over indicates severe depletion of intermediate and low-mass stars in the Arches cluster, possibly caused by its evolution in the Galactic Center environment. The Arches MF represents the first resolved observation of a starburst cluster exhibiting a low-mass truncated MF. This finding has severe implications for stellar population synthesis modelling of extragalactic starbursts, the derivation of integrated properties such as the total mass of star clusters in dense environments, the survival of low-mass remnants from starburst populations, and chemical enrichment during starburst phases. Subject headings: open clusters and associations: individual (Arches) — Galaxy: center – stars: mass function – techniques: high angular resolution

A sample of hundreds of simulated galaxy clusters is used to study the statistical properties of galaxy cluster formation. Individual assembly histories are discussed, the degree of virialization is demonstrated and various commonly used formation times are measured and inter-compared. In addition, the fraction of clusters which have “recently” undergone a major merger or significant mass jump ...

A comparative XMM-Newton archival data spectral study of the ultraluminous Xray source (ULX) M33 X-8 has been performed by using both the standard disk model and the newly developed slim disk models. The results of this analysis tend to confirm the hypothesis that M33 X-8 is an X-ray binary with a stellar-mass black hole accreting at super-Eddington rate.

We study the explosion mechanism of collapse-driven supernovae by numerical simulations with a new nuclear EOS based on unstable nuclei. We report new results of simulations of general relativistic hydrodynamics together with the Boltzmann neutrino-transport in spherical symmetry. We adopt the new data set of relativistic EOS and the conventional set of EOS (Lattimer-Swesty EOS) to examine the ...
